Overview
For My Own Art Sake was an independent group exhibition presented at Gallery 56, Crystal Palace, bringing together sixteen emerging artists working across different disciplines and mediums.
The project explored independent exhibition-making as a space for experimentation, collaboration, and artistic exchange outside traditional institutional structures.
I initiated, developed, and delivered the project from initial concept through to exhibition production.
Context
The exhibition was developed from an interest in creating opportunities for artists to present their work within a collaborative environment while exploring different approaches to curatorial organisation.
The project considered how self-organised exhibitions can support emerging practices by creating platforms for visibility, dialogue, and connection between artists and audiences.
My Role
As founder and curator, I managed all stages of the exhibition process.
This included developing the curatorial concept, selecting participating artists, communicating with artists, planning the exhibition structure, writing exhibition texts, coordinating installation, managing logistics, and supporting the public presentation of the work.
I worked directly with sixteen artists to bring together a coherent exhibition while maintaining space for individual practices and perspectives.
Process
The project involved a combination of curatorial research, artist conversations, spatial planning, production management, and collaborative decision-making.
The exhibition was developed through dialogue with participating artists, considering relationships between different practices, materials, and approaches.
The installation process required coordinating multiple works and adapting the exhibition structure to the physical conditions of the gallery space.
Outcomes
The exhibition successfully created a platform for sixteen artists to present their work and engage with a public audience.
The project strengthened my experience in independent curating, exhibition production, artist relations, and project coordination.
